What is the future of web design?

Websites have come a long way since the dotcom boom of the 90s. From responsive web design to large photo backgrounds, digital QR codes to social media badges, a number of cutting-edge trends and techniques are taking the web by storm. We sat down with some of our web design MD team and asked them one simple yet loaded question: What is the future of web design? Here’s what they had to say. 


Web Designer Trent Semler

“People are looking for websites that make their lives easier. Nobody wants something they have to manage if they’re already stretched thin (in time or money). There’s no excuse anymore for a website that’s pretty but doesn’t do exactly what you need it to do and push visitors in the direction you want them to go. Websites, when well designed and combined with SEO, deliver the best quality leads available — customers knocking at your door instead of you knocking on theirs.

Now that Google is rewarding people for good old, genuine and thorough content, web design is becoming more about the message and the user instead of the science of ranking your website higher. Too much energy was once wasted getting people to your website, while forgetting about how they interact with your site once they arrive. In the immediate future, we’re going to start seeing simpler, minimalistic websites with less clutter (less about your company history and more about what the visitor is on your site for), clearer and shorter messages (understanding that people don’t read all your content so put your best foot forward), no more pagination (infinite scrolling like on Pinterest or Tumblr), fixed menus and, of course, responsive web design.” – Trent Semler, Web Designer



Web Developer Andrew Lechowicz

“Right now we are more or less waiting for older browsers to ‘die’ so we can use the fancy new stuff that is already available to us. Things like CSS animations, transformations and shadows are already available to use but are unreliable due to varied browser support, especially on older browsers. The future web will be less forced and, as a result, will have a much better user experience.

People are starting to realize there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to their web needs. During the WordPress boom, a lot of people thought one solution could be modified to work for any client. At the same time, clients were asking for a ‘brand’— WordPress — when something completely different would have been a better choice for their needs. Clients and businesses that bought a ‘bargain’ site are realizing how hard it can be to upgrade or add features outside of the original scope. Clients have started asking for more custom CMS that fit their specific needs and will grow with them. I think we will see fewer sites and more apps in the future as well. Websites will become more data driven and start to provide the end user with something they value rather than being just an interactive brochure.” – Andrew Lechowicz, Web Developer

“I think we will see more designs that look good on any screen. This is becoming more and more important with all the different tablets and smartphones used now to view websites. Businesses need to start thinking about more second screen marketing, meaning while most people are watching TV they’re also browsing the Internet on a phone or tablet.

I see more businesses asking for websites they can edit themselves. They want to be in control of their own content and not have to call a designer every time they need an update. This requires them to pay more money up front for the site, but less money is spent over time when they need small updates to their site.

In order for a customer to excel in other types of marketing — eBlasts or printed pieces, for example — they need to have a website that will compel a client to want to contact them. More and more before a consumer decides to buy a product or service they do tons and tons of online research.
